Nagasaki is one of four cities that have publicly stated their intention to apply for one of three future IR permits in Japan. Osaka, Yokohama and Wakayama are the other three candidates. Tokyo is also considering entry, but has yet to be confirmed.
Nagasaki Prefecture announced the start of the application period on January 7. Nagasaki officials announce that they will choose the casino's winning proposal in August this year.
MGE originally targeted Hokkaido until the prefecture gave way.
An Asian-centered tribe
It has been many years since the Mohegan tribe simply ran their name Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut. Currently, MGE operates casinos in five states and in Canada.
The casino operator is now shifting its gaming business overseas, headed for South Korea. Mohegan spends $ 1.6 billion on the first phase of its IR "Inspire" located at Incheon International Airport. The center is scheduled to open in 2022.
In Japan, the MGE consortium in Oshidori selects Sasebo City in Nagasaki.
"Oshidori and MGE aim not only to work together to develop a world-class integrated resort, but also to create a dynamic community that will make Nagasaki a top destination and choice of accommodation," the announcement said in the announcement of the partnership.
Mario Kontomerkos, CEO of Mohegan Gaming, says Japan is a good fit for the company's expansion in Asia.
Our development strategy included significant cross-marketing opportunities between Project Inspire in Korea and Kyushu in Japan, ”said Kontomerkos.
Nagasaki Prefecture is located on the island of Kyushu. It is the third largest of the five main islands of Japan.
Along with South Korea and its trick for Japan, last year MGE was licensed to run a solitary IR casino in Athens, Greece.
Nagasaki little fish in the big pool
In Japan, which has legalized three commercial casinos, there are quite large cities. In fact, if Tokyo approves, the three largest cities in the country - Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka - will compete for one of the three gaming concessions.
City - population
- Tokyo - 8.6 million
- Yokohama - 3.7 million
- Osaka - 2.7 million
There are fewer than 500,000 inhabitants in Nagasaki. While not ideal for interested global casino operators, it may be for Japanese lawmakers to determine where IRs are going.
When the Japanese parliament legalized commercial gambling in 2018, the legislature did so in order to increase tourism in the Land of the Rising Sun. But the game package has also been designed to provide an economic spark in less populated areas that require large investments.
"[Casinos] will help boost regional economies and ultimately lead to the growth of the entire Japanese economy," said then Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
If Tokyo enters, Yokohama's chances may increase as the two metropolises border each other.
